And yet these people are more numerous than you might initially think.

Let’s take the example of a medium sized company who already has a considerable customer base, a few dozens of employees and who is relatively known on a niche market. How could its manager be convinced that having a professional website to represent his company is not a simple fad, but an actual necessity that increases brand awareness and even leads to higher profit? There is one simple answer: the past few years have been extremely challenging for business owners, who find it harder and harder to cope with high customer demands and an unfriendly economic context. The only way to survive and expand is to be innovative. Take advantage of every means of advertisement and use every small trick to be one step ahead of the competition.

So why not build a website? It is now easier than ever to find a reliable programming company that can help you show your business to the world. Besides, nowadays almost all fields of activity are subject ... (Read more)

Stop SOPA!

The SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a US bill introduced to stop Online Piracy. The bill is meant to allow the US Government to close websites that host content that is copyrighted. We here at Pixelfind are totally against the bill, because it is meant to threaten speech and innovation, and allow the US Government to close websites that have content generated by users – this means that website as big as Facebook or YouTube could go out of the law because of this bill.

The worst thing about SOPA is that it allows the US Government to close any website with what they consider of having problems directly from the DNS server, so you might have your favorite website closed the next day.

This is worrying for everybody using the free worldwide web.

We here at Pixelfind are worried about the situation on how the SOPA bill could pass in the US. It might be that this bill is in the US, but please consider the fact that almost 60% of all websites are hosted on server in the North American country.

The bill will be voted somewherearound January 2012 from what we know, and we hope that this bill will be denied from the start. Major companies like Google, Yahoo!, Craigslist or Facebook have already made their stand against this situation.

We'll keep you posted!

The study, titled "Inteligent Quotient (IQ) and Browser Usage" by canadian company AptiQuant compaired the test scores of a 101.326 individuals older than the age of 16 based on the browser they are using.

The results are fascinating. Users of Internet Explorer 6 have an average IQ score barely more than 80; Firefox and Chrome users fare much better, with an average IQ scores of around 110, while Opera and Camino users have an average IQ score more than 120.

It's also interesting to note that the average score of IE6 users were significantly higher in 2006, and that the IQ scores get better with newer versions of IE.

Don Morisson, the company's COO will retire and Thorsten Heins will take the expanded role of COO, product and sales.

This move comes after weak financial results in Q1 and an even worse outlook for the future. As a result for the bleak Q1 report, RIM shares took a beating, dropping 20% overnight.

Once a dominant force in the smartphone market, RIM recently fell third place, behind Apple's iOS and Google's Android. The imminent layoffs are necessary to keep the company financially sound, but RIM will have to rethink its entire smartphone and tablet strategy to catch up with it's rivals.

The man who revolutionized the Personal Computer Industry is putting his efforts - and foundation - to revolutionizing toilets. Microsoft founder Bill Gates said he will dedicate 42$ million towards the reinvention of the toilet.

Water hygiene and safe waste disposal are two of the biggest causes for infant mortalities in the developing countries. Gates and his foundation hope to create inexpensive toilets to grately improve the living conditions of millions of people.

"No innovation in the past 200 years has done more to save lives and improve health than the sanitation revolution triggered by invention of the toilet," said Sylvia Mathews Burwell, the president of the Global Development Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. "But it did not go far enough. It only reached one-third of the world. What we need are new approaches. New ideas."

Part of the foundation's plan is the Reinventing of the Toilet Challenge, which funds research at eight universities around the world to develop a toilet that will turn waste into energy, clean water or nutrients. Twitter is a website that allows many options, but they offer a limited functional option. The imposed limit of 140 characters per post foces the user to be very brief. This can make some feel limited, and find this service not very useful. Others, however, feel very free within this limit and embrace this limitation with a great passion.

So, for those interested in developing applications for Twitter, I have attached below a tutorial about their API:

http://www.webmonkey.com/2010/02/get_started_with_the_twitter_api/

or you can access directly Twitter's API page:

Google Will Retire Brands Blogger and Picasa in Google + Push

You can say goodbye to the Picasa and Blogger names: Mashable claims that Google intends to retire several non-Google name brands and rename them as Google products.

This move is part of the larger effort of the search giant to unify it's brand for the public launch of Google+, Google's social initiative.

Both services won't disappear, because they are two of Google's most popular products. Instead, according to two sources familiar with the matter, Google intends to rename Picasa as "Google Photos" and Blogger as "Google Blogs". Several other brands will most likely have the same faith, altough our sources made it clear that Youtube would not be rebranded. The technology giant closed Google Video, it's failed web video service, in May.

This move isn't without precendent, as Google aquired JotSpot in 2006 and rebranded it as Google Sites in 2008. In 2007, Google aquired VoIP platform GrandCentral and relaunched it as Google Voice in 2009.

Picasa and Blogger were also Google acquisitions, altough both companies have been part of Google empire for far longer. Pi... (Read more)

Hello,

I was thinking of posting today something useful for you guys, and I remembered about something we frequently use for our development, and that is loaders for when you have AJAX or Javascript loading in the background.

I can recommend 2 websites we have used for a very long time:
http://www.preloaders.net/

and

http://www.ajaxload.info/

You can choose your background and foreground color of the loader, the loader type (preloader.net is richer in examples) and the size of the animation.

Good luck in choosing what you need.

Nokia Corporation will exit the Japanese cellphone market at the end of August, reports Nikkei.

According to the same report, the Finnish handset manufacturer had stopped supplying cellphones to Japanese carriers from 2008.

Nokia will close the high-end Vertu handset stores in Tokio's Shibuya and Ginza districts by the end of July.

The Vertu business has been struggling to keep up with the rising in popularity of smartphones, the business daily reported.

Nokia's phone service, run on network infrastructure leased from NTT DoCoMo Inc. will be discontinued when it's contract will expire at the end of August. Nokia's Tokio office will stay open until the end of the year to handle fee refunds and other matters, the paper reported. Verdu handsets costs 600.000 yen ( around 7.450$ ) to 20 million yen ( 248.354$ ) each, with some models decorated with precious metals or traditional Japanese lacquer designs, the Nikkei reported.

Nokia has been restructuring after it's earning deteriorated due to the rise of Apple Inc.'s iPhone along with other smartphones.

IBM announced a seismic invention. This is a new kind of phase change memory (PCM) that can read and write 100 times faster then the current flash drive, remains reliable for millions of write-cycles ( as opposed to the flash drive of just thousands ) and is cheap enough to be used in anything from enterprise-level servers all the way down to mobile phones. PCM is based on a special alloy that can be nudged into different physical states, or phases, by controlled bursts of electricity.

In the past, this technology suffered from the tendency of one of these states to relax and increase its electrical resistance over time, leading to read errors. Another limitation of this is that every alloy cell could store only a bit of data. But IBM employees managed to burn this problem out: not only is their latest variant more reliable, but it can stare four data bits per cell, which means a new breaktrough for the data storage industry. Combine this with the promised... (Read more)

As anybody that has worked in CSS with Internet Explorer knows, you can have all sort of weird errors or different problems that you don't expect with it.

You can find some very good explications, for example, for the eternal 'min-width' problem in Internet Explorer, the 'text-transform' one and more.

So, enjoy.

Lesson II: HTML and XHTML languages (Introduction)

HTML means HyperText Markup Language. This is used by web browsers to display pages visually. HTML is based on the idea of tags, enclosed in the '<' and '>' characters. For eg: <html>.

Usually, all the HTML tags come in pairs - for eg, <body> and </body>. The first tag is the opening tag, while the second, the end tag. Inside these tags, web developers can add images, text, flash objects or other such informations.

Also, web browsers can use the informations for CSS files to show informations and modify the structure of the page.

The W3C organization maintains HTML and CSS development and encourages using CSS over HTML presentational tags.

HTMLs first aparition was in a document called HTML Tags in 1991, mentioned by Tim Berners-Lee. He describes 20 elements from the simple structure of the HTML from then. Besides the anchor link, these 20 elements are very influenced by the SMGLguid language, a SGML documentation used at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research).

HTML is currently at version 4.01, a new version, HTML5 being in development.

XHTML means eXtensible HyperText Markup Language and is a part of a big family of XML languages, created to extend HTML.

Web Programming Tutorial: HTTP Protocol

First of all, what is a protocol? A protocol is a set of rules used by computers to communicate. A protocol may include signals, authentication methods and possibilities of detection and correction of errors. A protocol describes the syntax, semantics, and synchronization of messages. As a broader definition, we can say that a protocol is used as a set of procedures (or rules) used to communicate.

HTTP means HyperText Transfer Protocol. It is the protocol used throughout the 'World Wide Web' and it is a cornerstone in its use. HTTP is a protocol used in request-response client-server model. Thus, a customer (eg a browser) sends an HTTP request to server. The server is used to store data, and resources (for example, a Web page or an image are considered resources) but also other functions for the client, returns a message to the Client.

The answer provided by the server contains information about completing the application and can contain any content requested by clients.

A client may be not only a Web browser. Let's think, for example, of web-crawlers that search engines use to crawl the web.
HTTP protocol is used mainly on the structure of another protocol, TCP / IP. TCP / IP is the protocol used to actually transfer from client to server. HTTP reso... (Read more)
